There are a number of services in Rhode Island that patients or healthcare providers can reach out to in the event of a mental health or substance use crisis. Learn more about these services below. 

The Providence Center- Community Diversion Clinicians

Hours of Operation: Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

The Providence Center clinician will respond to the crisis to evaluate children or adults for safety and will facilitate treatment at the appropriate level of care. Outside of normal business hours, assessments are possible on a limited basis for people in the Providence area. A referral can be made by calling the 24-hour emergency line listed above. The clinician answering will dispatch a clinician for an in-person assessment if that resource is available and indicated.

Crisis-trained clinicians are available 24/7 for clinical consultation to other providers in need of guidance.

Butler Hospital Patient Assessment Services

The Patient Assessment Services Department is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They will work with clients to identify and understand the psychological, psychiatric or emotional challenges they are facing. Their comprehensive psychiatric assessment is designed to provide an evaluation and inform treatment.

BH Link

BH Link is a behavioral health facility designed to provide assistance to a person in crisis by providing intervention services, and connecting people to ongoing treatment and care. Services are provided by a team of registered nurses, counselors, psychiatrists, phone screeners, and peer specialists. Clinicians listen to clients’ concerns and take the necessary steps to get people through their crisis and help make connections to longer-term services if needed.

  • BH Link Triage Center is a 24/7 community-based walk-in/drop-off facility where clinicians connect people to immediate, stabilizing emergency behavioral health services, and long-term care and recovery supports.

  • BH Link Hotline is a one-stop, statewide 24/7 call-in center that connects people to appropriate care and resources, when they or someone they care about is experiencing a behavioral healthcare crisis

Kids' Link RI

Kids’ Link RI™ is a behavioral health triage service and referral network. A program offered in collaboration with Gateway Healthcare, Lifespan, Hasbro Children's Hospital, and Bradley Hospital, Kids’ Link RI is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to help triage children and youth in need of mental health services and refer them to treatment providers.​

The free, confidential phone line, connects parents and caregivers to an experienced clinician that can help them access children’s services in Rhode Island, and determine the best place to go for treatment and counseling.

Anchor Recovery Services

Anchor Recovery is a supportive community of peers with lived experience dedicated to providing addiction recovery supports. Anchor members encourage each other to find new ways of living through meaningful relationships, health and wellness activities, social events, and a sense of community. Anchor Recovery Community Centers are located in Providence and Warwick. Our community outreach teams strive to meet people where they are at.

  • Anchor- Providence Safe Stations Available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, a person experiencing a substance abuse crisis can visit any of Providence’s 12 fire stations, speak with trained staff on duty, and within 15 minutes are seen by a peer recovery specialist.
  • Recovery Specialists are on call 24/7  at Kent Hospital, Women & Infants Hospital, Rhode Island Hospital, Miriam Hospital, Hasbro Children's Hospital, Newport Hospital, Landmark Hospital, Fatima Hospital, Roger Williams Hospital, and Westerly Hospital, South County Hospital. 

National Hotlines

  • National Suicide Prevention Hotline: Available to anyone who is in suicidal crisis or emotional distress

  • Trans Lifeline: This is a 24/7 peer support service run by trans people for trans and questioning callers
    (P): 1-877-565-8860
  • The Trevor Project:  This is a 24/7 hotline and text line for crisis intervention, especially for LGBTQIA+ youth

  • Crisis Text Line: Serves anyone, in any type of crisis, providing access to free 24/7 support through a medium people already use and trust: text.
